Formed 2.5 billion years ago, this gabbro comes from the Chibougamau region, deep in the Canadian Shield. It is one of the oldest gabbros on Earth: every stone in your glass carries a piece of that history.

The stone

The ritual

These 940-million-year-old metamorphic stones come from Saint-Élie-de-Caxton, in Mauricie. They were born when two continents collided to form the supercontinent Rodinia: heated and folded over millions of years, they took on the layered texture of gneiss.

These 2.7-billion-year-old stones come from the Chapais region. They were born from a dyke of magma that cut through volcanic rock during the Archean eon, when active volcanoes shaped the land that is now Québec.

These 1.15-billion-year-old stones come from the Lac-Saint-Jean anorthosite complex, one of the largest in the world. Often sold as "black granite", anorthosite is in fact a rock of its own, made almost entirely of plagioclase feldspar.
